In the afternoon of May 6, Peking University hosted a video conference on "Compendium of Information on Combating Covid-19 (Arabic version)" in the Moonlight Hall of Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center of Peking University with the embassies and consulates of Arab countries in China. The compilation includes important professional guidance documents on prevention, control and treatment, such as the Prevention and Control Plan for Covid-19 (1st to 6th editions) and the Treatment Plan for Covid-19 (7th edition) issued by China's National Health and Welfare Commission. 20 guests attended the online conference, including the Head of the Arab Legation in China, H.E. Turki Al-Madi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to China and other 11 ambassadors to China, Mahmoud El-Emin, Director of the Arab League Representative Office in China, and diplomats from the embassies of eight other Arab countries in China. Academician Han Qide, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th/11th National People's Congress of China, Vice-Chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, President Hao Ping of Peking University, Liu Jin, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange and Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Education, Executive Vice-President Zhan Qimin of Peking University and relevant units of the University, including the Party Committee Propaganda Department, the Department of Medicine, the School of Foreign Languages and the Department of International Cooperation Teachers attend the meeting on the scene. The conference was officially opened by a blessing video recorded in Arabic by Peking University students. The video was recorded and edited remotely by the Arabic students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages who are now in different parts of the world. It expresses the sincere feelings of the young PKU students to support the Arab countries in their fight against the Covid-19, wishing the Chinese and Arab people good health, peace, and having a long-lasting friendship.

Han Qide pointed out that in the process of fighting the Covid-19 together, more and more people clearly understand that "viruses spread without borders and we share a global destiny", which is conducive to further shaping new values that are in line with human development and progress, and provides an opportunity to improve the global governance system. China and Arab countries have a long history of interaction and friendship. In their joint efforts to combat the epidemic, China and the Arab countries have once again demonstrated their brotherly solidarity. The release of the Arabic version of the materials will help medical and health authorities, medical experts, health care workers and the general public in Arab countries to understand, learn from and make use of China's experience in epidemic prevention in a more comprehensive and in-depth manner, and build a new bridge to deepen Sino-Arab friendship.

Mr. Turki Elmadi said that the Covid-19 epidemic poses a threat and challenge not only to the Arab world and China, but also to the entire international community, including different countries, nations and organisations. He firmly believes that only through international solidarity and collaboration can we overcome this challenge together. At the beginning of the epidemic, all Arab countries, both official and private, expressed their support and solidarity with China, and they also felt the support from China. On behalf of all the Arab ambassadors in China, Turki Elmadi welcomed the close cooperation between the relevant institutions, especially universities and medical institutes, to exchange information and experience, in order to find effective treatments and maintain people’s health and social stability.

Hao Ping pointed out that during Covid-19, Peking University has shown its advantages as a comprehensive university, with medical staff from affiliated hospitals to assist Wuhan, and experts from the Faculty of Medicine conducting research in the fields of virology, public health and pharmacology. Besides, they also found the "Global Alliance of Top Experts in the Fight against Covid-19" was established in collaboration with leading universities and institutions around the world to promote global public health cooperation. He expressed Peking University's willingness to contribute to the Sino-Arab cooperation in the fight against the epidemic, together with the Arab missions in China. He was confident that the cooperation between the people of the world, China and the Arab countries in the fight against the Covid-19 would be successful. He looks forward to meeting his Arab friends in the shadow of the Weiming lake and Boya towers as soon as the Covid-19 subsides.

Liu Jin pointed out that solidarity and cooperation are powerful weapons in dealing with the current global spread of the Covid-19. In the course of fighting the epidemic, the Chinese government has informed the World Health Organization of the epidemic, shared with other countries the genetic sequence of the virus, prevention and control plans and treatment protocols, sent medical experts to other countries, and provided emergency material assistance to the best of its ability. She said that the Chinese Ministry of Education supports universities to combat the epidemic, and that Peking University has made a special contribution to the fight against the epidemic by translating relevant literature on the epidemic into Arabic so that the governments and people of Arab countries can understand and learn from it.

Zhan Qimin introduced the work done by Peking University Medical School in China's fight against the Covid-19, scientific research, public health management, campus prevention and control, and the work of think tanks from the perspective of front-line fight, and said that in the future, Peking University Medical School is willing to join hands with Arab countries, cooperate in the fight against the Covid-19 and share the fruits.

Ning Qi introduced the translation of relevant documents and materials. Since the outbreak of the Covid-19, the School of Foreign Languages has given full play to its multilingual expertise and organised multilingual volunteer teams to undertake text translation, spoken translation and online and offline multilingual emergency language services, sharing China's experience in fighting the epidemic with other countries around the world.

At the conference, the ambassadors of Arab countries in China, including the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to China, Ali Zahiri, and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to China,Anwar Abdullah, highly appreciated the actions taken by the Chinese government and expressed their gratitude to Peking University for sending medical teams and translating prevention and medical treatment materials.
